Blisters for Bread’s Charity Fun Walk Feeds More Hungry Children
On 28 August a record number of 16,350 walkers stepped out to support the annual Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk in Green Point. Blisters for Bread, now in its 43rd year, is the Peninsula School Feeding Association’s (PSFA) flagship fundraising project.
The walk, which started and ended at the Green Point Cricket Club, offered 3 distances...
Lunch Is On ...You?
In 2010, PSFA launched the ‘Lunch Is On Me’ campaign wherein we appealed to the public to purchase a R10 sticker to feed one child for an entire week at school on our programme. Our goal was largely to raise additional funds to meet the increased need we inevitably face each winter.
‘Lunch Is On Me’ resonated with people and we were able to raise over R40,000 to feed more than 4,000 children for a...
PSFA Expands Breakfast Programme
February 1st marked the reopening of our school breakfast programme for the 2011 school year. In 2010, we identified 50,000 learners in 145 schools, who were in dire need of the added nutrition, offered by PSFA’s breakfast programme twice a week. Today, we are providing mealie meal to 6,000 learners in 178 schools across the Province.
A school breakfast programme is essential in some areas because children arrive at...
PSFA Donates More Kitchens to Schools
Recognising the dire need in our schools for safe, hygienic and adequate preparation facilities for our feeding programme, PSFA’s Management Committee allocated R3million in the current financial year to build kitchens at schools. Over the past year, we have improved our model, to include wall and floor tiling. We now have two sound options which we use, depending on the number of children fed in each school. All the...
Long Service Certificates Awarded to PSFA Staff
PSFA’s Management Committee introduced long service awards for those staff members who have served for many years because they believe in the work we do and find fulfilment and enrichment in their involvement with serving underprivileged children.
At the staff party held in December, PSFA’s Chairman, Mr .Kader, Vice-Chairman, Mr. Benatar, and Treasurer, Mr. Weber, along with other committee members, honoured...
PSFA's Milk Can Art Project 2008
PSFA held it’s second auction of artistically reworked milk cans. The first auction was held in 2004 at the AVA and was sponsored by Clover Dairies. It was such a success that we decided to revisit the concept in celebration of our 50th anniversary.
We are most grateful to Pick 'n Pay for sponsoring our 2008 Milk Can Art Project. Well-known artists such as Carol Mangiagalli, Jill Trappler, Gary Frier, Annie...
National Children's Day 2008
On 1 November, PSFA held its third annual National Children's Day Exhibition at Canal Walk, Century City. The event highlighted the reality of hunger in school-going children, and PSFA's mission to address this problem. We set up an exhibit, run by PSFA staff, who distributed information and answered questions from people interested in the work we do.
Sasko Bakeries were once again our generous sponsors, kindly...
PSFA's Breakfast Programme
In November 2008, PSFA introduced a mealie meal breakfast programme in ten schools, to determine the feasibility, costs and logistics of implementation. The overall objective was to provide a nutritious cereal to children when they arrive at school, as the cooked food is only served around first interval at about 10h00. Mondays and Fridays were chosen to serve the mealie meal. Mondays because children would have had little or...
PSFA provides school feeding in PE
Since the inception of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) in 1994, there have been many interruptions to the delivery of school feeding in the Eastern Cape, due to corruption and maladministration. The Eastern Cape is one of the poorest provinces, with high incidences of malnutrition-related diseases and deaths reported, because of the level of poverty. PSFA’s Management Committee has, for many...
PSFA Pioneers New Kitchen Concept
PSFA has been providing converted shipping containers to schools built before 1994, that have inadequate preparation facilities to dedicate for school feeding. These kitchens were equipped with gas stoves, storage cupboards, shelving, an industrial double sink, and all the pots, pans, and serving utensils they require. The container option was never meant to be a long term solution as they are prone to rust....
