Blisters for Bread 2011
Blisters for Bread’s Charity Fun Walk Feeds More Hungry Children
On 28 August a record number of 16,350 walkers stepped out to support the annual Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk in Green Point. Blisters for Bread, now in its 43rd year, is the Peninsula School Feeding Association’s (PSFA) flagship fundraising project.
The walk, which started and ended at the Green Point Cricket Club, offered 3 distances – 5km, 10km, and 18km. The Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia De Lille, started the 5 and 10km walks.
All funds raised from the event are directed to PSFA’s vital school feeding programme. In total, R650,000 was raised from entry fees, donations, refreshment station advertising, corporate marquee space sold, and t-shirt sales.
Every school day PSFA provides feeding to 325,200 children in 743 primary, secondary and special-needs schools across the province. We receive a subsidy from the Department of Education’s National School Nutrition Programme to feed 90% of these learners. The difference, in excess of R10million annually, is covered from funds that have to be raised.
Andy Du Plessis, PSFA’s Director and walk organiser, had this to say “We are encouraged by the record number of walkers coming out to support PSFA. The event grows larger each year, and we are overwhelmed by the positive feedback from participants.’
We would like to thank our partners DraftFCB, our advertising agency that does pro bono work for PSFA; Peninsula Beverages, for logistical support, product sponsorship and the Coke Stage Rig; and the Lions Clubs of Cape Town for their experienced marshalling team. We would also like to thank our sponsors – GoodHope FM – and especially SeanO our Blisters for Bread Ambassador, Argus, and Curves.
Photos of the walk were taken by professional photographer Mia Feinstein of Mia Feinstein Photography. Mia is a PSFA volunteer and does work for PSFA pro bono. The photos can be viewed on PSFA’s website on the Blisters for Bread page (www.psfa.org.za).
The event took place without incident, and everyone had such great fun on the day. As walkers returned they were entertained by local bands Just Friendz, D-seven and Soap Girls, who all donated their time.
Thank you to all our walkers for each ‘walking to feed 16 children’.
We look forward to seeing you all next year - on Sunday the 26th of August 2012.
